A Bright Idea for Staying Connected over the Summer

Well….I got nothin’ else. Next week will be my last post [ tear 🙁  ] https://justpaste.it/paperovernight-review so I will check in with y’all then.  Hasta luego!

We are teachers which means we all love sticky-notes-so why not have them online in a fully collaborative website to do your planning with this summer? If that sounds appealing then you should definitely check out linoit.com. There are similar websites to linoit but few give you the freedom you find here as you have an infinite workspace where you can put your stickies, pictures, files and videos in any location you want. This is great when you have an idea and want to add it quickly without crunching out a big spreadsheet or word document. It’s also really cool to see your idea develop since you have the ability to add media directly to your canvas. I like this because I can put the link of my canvas into my “Professional Feeds” group in Edmodo and when I read about great ideas from my PLN, I can instantly add them to my list-no sweat! Like I said before, this is also a collaborative webiste, so you can share your canvas with others and let them contribute as well. To demonstrate, here is the link for a canvas I created called “Edmodo This Year.” If you have a second, add a sticky and try it out!

The penultimate post on Web 2.0 from Bret!

Edmodian of the Week: Mrs. Amy Bright!

I came across a reply by Mrs. Bright in response to one of my posts in the communities and was amazed by what she was doing with Edmodo this summer. We are always presented with the problem of keeping up student learning during the summer months and Mrs. Bright is right on top of that with Edmodo. For those of you who still have a few days left, read Mrs. Bright’s explanation of what she’s done and see if you can’t do something similar.

My class will be going to two different middle schools and four students are moving out of state. Edmodo has kept my students connected. There is constant chatter on the new group between the students. They are sharing stories of summer fun and family visits, and staying in contact with a student who has already moved to another state. We all feel like we were a part of this student’s move because he left us posts on Edmodo during his three day move across country. I personally know how it feels to leave your friends because of a family move, so I am grateful that my students have the ability to stay connected with each other during a tough situation such as moving. As my students are too young for Facebook, Edmodo offers them a social networking environment that is safe and convenient. I am anticipating many videos posted of summer fun, and can’t wait to discover more ways that Edmodo will keep my students connected!

Thank you Mrs. Bright for showing us more ways that we can pioneer education with Edmodo. Keep us updated on how your Edmodo-summer turns out with your students!

My 5th grade students’ summer use of Edmodo started with a question. “Mrs. Bright, will we still be able to use Edmodo after the last day of school?” It didn’t take me long to realize that it could be done! I simply created a new Group for my class. Immediately my students were excited and left their first notes for each other on the new Group.

Any time I find something that lets me (or my students) work with others, I’m a happy camper. In this case, set up a tent, folks, we’re at the KOA of internet resources!

I can’t believe next week will be our last week to post-time flies when you’re having fun and this has been a blast. Thanks to those of you who’ve kept up with my rambling the past weeks, I appreciate the attention, however undeserved it may be. Today though, I want y’all to hear from someone else as I have re-instituted the…

Necesitas ir a tu casa.

Yes! Not everyone who goes to Harvard scores a perfect 800 and has a GPA of 4.0 (in fact, very few actually hit those perfect scores).

Application Volume Drops in Top B-Schools

According to Columbia’s vice dean, Amir Ziv, “There’s merit to the argument that if the financial industry isn’t doing well, it should hit schools that are more exposed to it than others. In the long run, if it’s not doing well, you’ll have fewer students interested in schools that are excellent in finance.”

If you take the purpose-driven approach to admissions that I advocate, apply to Columbia, NYU, and any other program if you feel it supports your goals and that you have a reasonable chance of acceptance. Columbia has excellent programs in value investing, private equity, real estate, luxury goods marketing, retail, and a host of other fields. If those programs will help you achieve your goals, your chances of acceptance have improved and the quality of those programs has not changed. BUT, you will still need to do better than the competition. You can just expect less competition than those applicants who applied two years ago, when Columbia accepted approximately one out of six applicants.

For more information on the current application volume drops, please see “Chicago Booth Apps Down 3%” and “Columbia MBA Apps Plunge 19%,” two more recent P&Q articles.

Accepted.com ~ Helping You Write Your Best

At the same time, it’s too early to break out the champagne in anticipation of an easy acceptance at this Ivy League program. If Columbia admits the same number of applicants as it did in previous years, even with the drop in applications, it will still have only an acceptance rate slightly above 20%. While significantly higher than Columbia’s 15.9% acceptance rate in 2011, CBS will still reject roughly four applicants for every one that it accepts.

My Take + Takeaways for Applicants:

A recent Bloomberg Businessweek article explains that as Wall Street faces turmoil, applications go down at top b-schools with close finance industry ties, specifically Columbia Business School and NYU Stern.

Last year, NYU Stern sent 46% of its graduating class into the financial service industry. This year, applications are down 12%.

A Poets & Quants article shows that despite these declines, Columbia has a silver lining to celebrate: It just received an anonymous $25 million gift. And let’s not forget the $100 million gift CBS received two years ago.

The hit on application volume is much lighter, the article goes on to say, at schools that rely less on Wall Street jobs. At Harvard Business School, for example, applications are down only 2%, and at Wharton, only 1%. These schools, as well as Chicago Booth which has also experienced only a slight decline in applications, report that about 40% of 2012 graduates entered the financial services industry.

However, as both Poets and Quants and Bloomberg Businessweek point out, the drop means a higher acceptance rate at Columbia and NYU. It means that if Columbia is to maintain its high average GMAT score, it will need to be a little less choosy about grades or extra-curriculars. It may welcome (and again be a little less choosy) about non-financial types so that it can diversify. (FYI: Diversification is one of those things b-schools say is a good thing.)

The Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) reported that interest in financial jobs has been down since 2008 (with a short upward jump in 2010).

I’m not convinced that the sharp plunge for Columbia and serious drop for NYU is solely due to their ties to Wall Street. Chicago, Wharton, and Yale, for example, send and receive similar percentages of their classes to and from Wall Street and suffered much smaller drops in application volume. Lack of no-co-signer loans for international applicants certainly is likely a contributing factor at CBS. I also saw some speculation that the documentary Inside Job, which does not portray Columbia’s dean favorably, may www.justpaste.it/top-edition-writing-services also have hurt the school.  Dependence on Wall Street accounts for some of the drop, but I don’t believe that it accounts for all of it.

Half of Columbia’s 2012 graduates entered financial services, with 18 MBAs heading to Goldman Sachs alone. This year, Columbia experienced a 19% decrease in full-time MBA applications.

Applications are down at top b-schools

۸ Ways to Use Writing Service Over the Summer | Writing Service Blog

“I plan on keeping in touch with my new students. They got the code for the courses at the end of school so they can join Writing Service. I give summer homework and this was I can answer any problems they might have.” – Marie Jump

“We are using Writing Service over the summer with rising 6th grade students at one of our middle schools. The group is for their summer reading program and will allow students to communicate what they are reading, share book recommendations, and turn in their summer reading book form. It is giving us a chance to play with Writing Service during the summer with teachers and students for a specific purpose and time frame.” – Eve Heaton

۱. Writing Service Summer Camp

As the school year ends, many educators are sharing the great ways they plan to use Writing Service over the summer. If you’re looking to stay connected with colleagues and engage students over the summer, here are eight ideas to help you get started, as shared by members of the Writing Service community:

۳٫ Concept Study (for teachers)

Looking for book recommendations? Search the Writing Service Communities for recommendations.

۶٫ Engage New Students

Create a group for teachers who are new to your school or are in their first year of teaching. This group can act as a support community to help these new teachers transition. You can use the group to provide support materials, discuss curriculum or answer any questions they may have as they are getting started.

۴٫ Alumni Groups

۷٫ Host Professional Development Sessions

“We are using Writing Service this summer for our incoming fifth graders. The only classes at our K-5 elementary with computers are the fifth grade. So we decided this year we would help speed up the learning curve and get students excited about 21st century learning by having an Writing Service Summer Camp. We have a book club, websites for them to learn how to use, apps from the Writing Service app store and just an area to help build community for our classes. So far we have almost half of our students signed up and we have only been out 3 days! The participation has been great so far! We will post tasks and challenges for fun twice a week and award badges to students who complete the assigned task or challenge. I think by using Writing Service over the summer we will see great results in our learning this next year!” – Wes Brownfield

۸٫ New Teacher Group

” I will be doing a training for the staffs of my two junior high school sites. The first half of the day will focus on Writing Service itself and how teachers can implement it, and the second half of the day will focus on other digital resources the library has available to teachers and how they can help teachers with planning lessons, doing research projects, etc.” – Amanda Sharpe

How will you be using Writing Service this summer? Share with us in the comments.

۲٫ Summer Reading Group

Writing Service makes for a smooth and exciting transition.” – Robert Miller

۵٫ justpaste.it/top-custom-essay-writing Science Projects

“Our English department has decided to do a ‘book study’ of sorts over the summer. We are actually going to do a “concept study.” Each teacher has a concept that they need to find good resources for and an engaging way to teach for 6, 7 and 8th graders.” – Candace Weathersby

“I intend to give a summer week-long course on web 2.0 tools and on Glogster. I’d like to use Writing Service as the platform to run the course.” – John Zoccola

“Our science department created an Writing Service group for students to have a venue to discuss their science fair projects. Our summer assignment is for students to decide on a topic and research the topic to be able to design a testable question by the time school starts again in the fall. The group allows students to maintain dialogue with teachers and other students to help with approvals and proper paperwork required before starting experimentation in the fall. The dialogue allows teachers to offer feedback and suggestions when students need it most. At the time learning at its finest.” – Jane Beach

Here my leaving group can keep in touch with their friends who are now spread around different campuses. I have also found that my students of previous years welcome them with comments, tips, and suggestions about their upcoming new experience (advice about their new teachers, lunch choices, lockers, and strategies to get to that next class).

“Teaching fifth grade, we end the year with our students moving on to several different middle schools. It has become a rite of passage for me to ceremonially add my leaving middle school students into my “MAX in Middle School” Group.

۳ Reasons Why You Shouldn’t Apply Late to Med School

• Applying to Medical School Late in the Application Cycle

Prior to joining Accepted, Alicia worked for five years as Student Advisor at UC Davis’ postbac program where she both evaluated applications and advised students applying successfully to med school and related programs.

۳٫ Applying late and without an MCAT score is like double daring the Fates. Since most schools will not review your application until they receive your MCAT score, applying late and then forcing the schools to hold off on reviewing your application may put you even further behind.  Generally, I don’t recommend applying without an MCAT score.  You don’t want any hidden surprises especially when it comes to determining the direction of your career.  If necessary, apply early the next cycle after you have received competitive scores.

Applying with a complete application early definitely gives you that head start on acceptance!

۲٫ If you are rushing to submit your application late, chances are there will be mistakes. In the mad dash to get your application submitted, it’s easy to leave out critical details or write sloppy essays that do not represent you well.  If you have put off applying, there may be a reason behind it.  It’s important to examine the reasons that have forced you to consider applying late. It  would probably be in your best interest to take your time and apply early rather than do a rush job that will only force you to face the possibility of reapplying the next year.  Since it is so expensive and time consuming to apply, doing it right the first time is in your best interest.

Here are the reasons why applying late can hurt you:

When you have spent years preparing to apply to medical school, the last thing you want to do is jeopardize your chance of acceptance by applying late.  Since selection committees operate on a rolling admissions basis, if you submit your application in August or September, they may not have enough spots left to offer you an acceptance, even though your application may be strong.

• Is My Med School Admissions Profile Competitive?

۱٫ Rolling admissions is based on the concept of first come, first served. If you apply late, you may never receive a review if there are no spots left available.  Medical schools receive thousands of applications and this requires hours and hours of time spent on reviewing applications and interviewing candidates.  Once a medical school has met its https://justpaste.it/top-custom-essay-writing enrollment capacity and filled its waiting list, there is very little time spent on reviewing applications—especially given the time and energy it takes to conduct interviews and MMI interviews, in particular.

From nearly a decade of experience in medical school admissions, I recommend getting your application submitted anywhere from mid-June to late July.  I have seen students receive acceptances when they have applied in August and September but it’s a wild ride and one I recommend avoiding, if at all possible.  To avoid unnecessary stress, plan on applying early.

A UAMS M3 Shares Her Med School Experiences

This interview is the latest in an Accepted blog series featuring interviews with medical school applicants and students, offering readers a behind-the-scenes look at top medical schools and the med school application process. And now, introducing Carly…

I have loved blogging! I have been able to write about many topics from premed classes and the med school application process to more recently about my third year clerkships. While I haven’t been able to post and share as much as I would like, I have loved being able to reflect on and share my experiences with my audience. In the past year, I have really been getting into Instagram. I love how quick it is to share what I’m doing on a particular day and can share much more frequently than I am able to on my blog.

Carly: I definitely understand the argument here. Not only is the test ridiculously expensive and inconvenient with having to travel to one of only five testing centers across the country, but it also is somewhat redundant to what many medical schools are doing already.

You can follow Carly’s med school adventure by checking out her blog or Instagram (@doctorsoftomorrow). Thank you Carly for sharing your story with us!

Carly: My favorite clerkship has been Pediatrics! I always thought I would like to specialize in pediatrics but wanted to be sure I actually really liked it before deciding. Luckily, I did! I love the cheerful and friendly atmosphere of a children’s hospital and really enjoy spending time with kids.

۲٫ I am the oldest of five kids in my family with the youngest two being adopted from Russia, so I have learned to speak a little Russian.

Accepted: We’d like to get to know you! Where are you from? Where and what did you study as an undergrad?

Eventually, I started to shift my thinking more towards trying to express to whomever would read my personal statement why I was passionate about medicine and wanted to become a physician. I found this much easier to talk about and was able to share my heart on the paper.

Carly: Growing up, I have lived all over the South. For the past several years, however, my family has lived in Arkansas and I’ve grown to love it here!

I know that many medical schools also have their own internal clinical skills exams to test their students’ communication and clinical competence and feel that these are extremely helpful in regards to how much personal feedback can be given on this individual level.

At first, I didn’t feel qualified enough to share any advice or tips with others since I was just going through it myself, but I also wanted to have an outlet to share with others who might be going through the same thing.

Carly: The greatest challenge for me definitely was writing my personal statement. I have always found it hard to talk about myself and so found it pretty difficult to write about what I had done as a premed.

Accepted: Why did you choose this program? What is your favorite thing about that program? Is there anything you’d change?

Over the past three years, my favorite thing about my school has been my classmates. After going through the same trials and experiences that are all a part of med school together, we have grown to become a very close-knit group.

Related Resources:

I actually really enjoyed my accounting classes much more than my “science-driven” brain initially thought I would.

Carly: I started blogging during my junior year of undergrad. I was becoming overwhelmed with my upcoming research project, MCAT prep, application season, and so on, and was getting really stressed out. I started looking online for any tips and encouragement and then started getting the idea of making my own blog to share what I had (and was) learning on this journey to becoming a doctor.

• Med School Admissions Resources

Accepted: Can you tell us about your blog? Who is your target audience? What have you gained from the blog experience?

۳٫ I am a dog lover through and through! My family’s five year old click site black lab, Cocoa Bean, always keeps us on our toes.

Accepted: What’s your position on the recent petition to cancel the Step 2 CS

Accepted: What’s your favorite clerkship so far?

My school has a great clinical skills program and we have had many clinical skills exams during the past three years. All of them have been modeled exactly how CS is done with specific, individual feedback from both the standardized patients on our communication skills and from attendings and faculty on our clinical reasoning and approach.

The only slight problem we’ve had has been with our curriculum. We were the first class to go to a new curriculum format at our school so there have been a few kinks to work out, but I think a lot of these have been figured out in the last couple of years and I really think the new curriculum is greatly helping everyone learn better and more efficiently.

• Med School Kicks Off: Ten Tips to Get You Through the Season

Accepted: Looking back at the application process, what would you say was your greatest challenge? How would you advise other applicants who may be experiencing similar challenges?

Carly:

Carly: I went to undergrad less than an hour away from UAMS and so our premed program was very involved with the school. I was always interested in how much the med students who came to talk with us really seemed to love being there. As the only medical school in the state, it is a decently sized school but still retains a hometown feel. I love how personable the professors and attendings are and how much they really care about the students doing well.

• The Best 4 Things to do Before Med School

Carly:  I am currently a third year medical student at The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) in Little Rock.

Do you want to be featured in Accepted’s blog? If you want to share your med school journey with the world (or at least with our readers), email us at bloggers@accepted.com.

Accepted: Can you share three fun facts about yourself?

Accepted: Where are you currently in med school? What year?

I went to Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas for undergrad and majored in Biochemistry with a minor in Accounting. Kind of random, I know, but I wanted to learn more about business and finance in case I decided to open my own medical practice one day.

۱٫ I love to travel! My mom is a food and travel blogger so we have had the opportunity to travel all over the country. My favorite place to go is Alaska! The scenery there is so beautiful and breathtaking. We are going to Alaska again this summer and I could not be more excited!!
